Job Search Skills
So how do I find the right job ? |
A recent Department of Labor study indicates that an
average
person holds nearly 10 jobs between the ages of 18 and 36.
Often the changes are voluntary as people's interests change
or they move up the career ladder. Sometimes job changes are
needed because of corporate mergers, "downsizing",
bankruptcies, or technology changes.
The bottom line is that
it's extremely important to develop
the skills needed to not only get that first real job, but
also to change and grow as your life circumstances change.
The Career Services staff is here to help you navigate your
career journey, no matter where it might take you.
We can help with:
Self-Knowledge
-
Which career fields are most compatible with
your personal interests, aptitudes and values?
Professional
Etiquette -
What is the proper way to introduce colleagues?
Which is your water glass at a formal dinner?
How many thank-you notes do you send after an
interview?
Resume writing and
revision -
Which format will make your
resume stand out from the crowd? How to focus on
accomplishments rather than responsibilities in
each position.
Internships and
summer jobs -
How to get the work experience
that employers are looking for.
Cover letters and
thank-you notes -
How the little details can
seal the deal in an employment search.
Finding the jobs
-
How to "network" and use available
resources and on-line tools to find the really
great opportunities.
Interviews -
How to prepare for traditional or behavioral
interview formats. Practice opportunities and
exposure to some typical questions that may be
asked. What homework you should do before the
interview, and what questions you might ask the
employer.
